*Kauna

Kaun är ensam elden;
Och såret i sjuk kroppen.
Det rensar djupt hjärna min,
Kaun rensar min själ!

Kauna, the great purifier, the torch and the wildfire, burns away the decay in my heart, and stings at my disrepair.

The ulcer burns the body in sickness. The self which is left to rot will not rise again. Fate will give like for like, and death for weakness, and illness for laziness.

“Ulcer is children’s scourge,
struggle,
home in decay.”
-Icelandic rune poem

Fire cleanses the soul, and lights the way, as a well tended hearth lights a hall. But left unchecked, the fire becomes wild and burns away the home. Such is with passion and knowledge, that they will guide one forward, but untamed passion will lead to wild disarray, and the un-tempered mind is no better than that of a fool. Knowledge is useless if it cannot be used. Talent is worthless unless exercised.

“Torch is known to all by its flame,
pale and bright;
and often burns where the nobility rest.”
Anglo-Saxon rune poem

The mind is powerful, but only if kept sharp as a well tended blade. The passion of the spirit is mighty, but with no direction it fizzles in great disappointment. The body in health will live long by its own will, but the body in decay will be rewarded with sickness and death.

Kauna, the cleansing fire and the fateful ulcer!

Kaun är ensam elden;
Och såret i sjuk kroppen.
Det rensar djupt hjärna min,
Kaun rensar min själ!
